Four Innovative Digital Solutions for Social Impact from Japan Nominated to World Summit Award 2025

World in You, Japan Country Expert of the World Summit Award (WSA), is thrilled to announce the nomination of four pioneering initiatives from Japan for the World Summit Award 2025. These initiatives leverage digital technology to address pressing social issues and contribute to positive global change.
At World in You, we are dedicated to supporting non-profit organizations and companies in our region that strive to create social value. We believe in fostering their learning from global insights and cases, empowering them to expand their impact beyond regional boundaries.
The World Summit Award, established in 2003 during the World Summit on the Information Society by the United Nations, has been recognizing digital innovation for 20 years. Each year, 40 organizations, including startups, non-profit entities, and companies, are selected for their outstanding contributions to making the world a better place through digital solutions. Winners receive an invitation to the World Congress, scheduled for April 2026 in Austria, Vienna, where they can network with entrepreneurs and experts from over 180 countries.

・CALL4
CALL4 transforms Japan's judiciary into an accessible tool for social change by creating the country's first digital platform dedicated to public interest litigation. Through innovative integration of crowdfunding, storytelling, and open data access, CALL4 empowers citizens to challenge discriminatory laws and policies, turning isolated legal battles into powerful movements for inclusion and democratic participation.
The platform's user-friendly design ensures accessibility regardless of technical background, while interactive features including donation comments and social media integration sustain public engagement throughout lengthy trials, addressing plaintiff isolation common in public interest cases.
CALL4 operates with a unique decentralized model that empowers diverse plaintiffs rather than centralizing legal action. While public interest litigation exists globally, citizen-accessible digital support systems remain rare worldwide. The zero-fee policy ensures all funds support litigation directly, creating a sustainable ecosystem that has earned recognition including the 2023 Human Rights Award from the Tokyo Bar Association.
CALL4 has achieved remarkable impact with over 100 million yen raised supporting 83 lawsuits, demonstrating exceptional win rates above 50% compared to Japan's typical 10% success rate for public interest litigation.
CALL4 addresses UN SDGs 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) by amplifying minority voices and enabling judicial correction of injustices, demonstrating how digital technology can transform social structures and create new models for participatory democracy.
・JOYCLE
JOYCLE revolutionizes waste management through decentralized infrastructure that converts waste into resources on-site without transport or incineration.By combining AI-controlled pyrolysis hardware with IoT monitoring, JOYCLE enables municipalities, hospitals, and remote communities to reduce costs and CO₂ emissions while building resilient circular economies in regions where centralized systems fail.
JOYCLEs portable, scalable design addresses critical infrastructure gaps in depopulated regions, remote islands, and disaster zones where large-scale facilities are economically or geographically unfeasible. Flexible deployment models including sales, rentals, and shared units lower barriers for resource-constrained communities while enabling rapid emergency response when conventional transport routes are disrupted.
Proven effective under Japans challenging conditions, JOYCLE demonstrates significant operational and economic impact by reducing hospital infectious waste treatment costs by 30-50% while enabling municipalities to maintain essential services despite aging populations and shrinking budgets. This validation in demanding environments establishes globally scalable infrastructure applicable to Asia-Pacific island nations and developing regions facing similar waste management constraints.
JOYCLE addresses multiple UN SDGs by transforming waste from liability into resource, simultaneously achieving CO₂ reduction and circular economy advancement while strengthening community resilience against demographic decline and climate-related disasters.
・MEDI
MEDI pioneers digital wellness through "Information Texturing" technology that transforms screen interaction from a health risk into a health-promoting experience. By replicating paper's natural optical properties, MEDI addresses the growing epidemic of digital eye strain, sleep disruption, and cognitive fatigue, creating displays that support rather than undermine human wellbeing in our screen-dependent world.
The platform combines paper-like comfort with high-performance digital capabilities through innovative light diffusion and layered structure technology. Real-time environmental sensing automatically optimizes viewing conditions, while IoT-based analytics enable schools and families to manage digital wellbeing through usage visualization.
MEDI's human-centered design eliminates glare and prevents fatigue-inducing postures while maintaining consistent visibility across diverse lighting environments. The core technology quantifies comfort through four optical metrics and integrates IoT sensing, cloud analytics, computer vision, and adaptive algorithms, protected by six international patents.
This breakthrough represents a fundamental shift from conventional screen-time management to reducing physiological screen load itself. MEDI bridges limitations of existing display technologies, creating an "Active Wellbeing Display" that continuously adapts to environmental conditions and individual usage patterns.
Market validation shows 75% preference for paper-like displays in US-UK surveys, with over 50% willing to pay $500+. Educational demonstrations confirm improved concentration, while 30+ companies across education, mobility, and digital art seek collaboration. International recognition includes IEEE Entrepreneurship 2024 Star award.
MEDI addresses UN SDGs through digital wellness: SDG 3 by reducing visual fatigue and improving sleep/concentration; SDG 4 through comfortable extended learning; and SDG 9 via international patents and global manufacturing partnerships.
